A cargo van crossed the center line and hit a pickup truck head on Monday morning along Honoapiilani Highway, killing the driver of the pickup and sending the van operator to the hospital, according to police.

The white 2017 Mercedes-Benz cargo van, operated by a 20-year-old Kahului man, was traveling northbound on Honoapiilani Highway when it crossed left of center and collided head on with a silver 1987 Nissan pickup truck traveling south on the highway.

The Kahului man was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room in stable condition.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified the man as 69-year-old Jimmy Alvarez Barbosa of Lahaina.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol is pending, and the investigation is ongoing.

Lahaina-bound traffic was backed up all the way to the pali, while Kahului-bound traffic snaked along the bypass all the way to Hokiokio Place at around noon Monday as police cleared the scene. Officers were contraflowing traffic on the road past the Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center.

The incident was Maui County’s ninth traffic fatality of the year, as compared to three at the same time last year.
