Memorial Day ceremony planned

The Maui County Veterans Council will be holding a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday with the theme of “The Forgotten War,” paying special tribute to Korean War veterans.

The program will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the lawn area at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery located at 3363 Baldwin Avenue.

Maj. Gen. Stephen D. Tom of Honolulu will be this year’s keynote speaker. The ceremony will honor prisoners of war and those missing in action, as well as Maui County veterans who have died over the past year and are buried at the cemetery. The program will also include a helicopter drop of 10,000 rose petals over the veterans’ graves, as well as floral tributes and a dove release. Music will be provided by Maui High School’s band, with a special appearance by Honolulu choral group Melemai Kapuuwaima.

Refreshments will be served before and after the ceremony. Additional parking is available across the street courtesy of Maui Land & Pine.

The Memorial Day Ceremony is sponsored by MCVC and Maui County. Prior to the ceremony, the Boys Scouts and their fathers will be decorating all the grave sites with American flags on Saturday morning, while the Girls Scouts will be placing lei on the graves Sunday morning.
