A giving tournament
First photo: Sentry Tournament of Champions sponsors, staff and volunteer partners pose at Hale Makua Kahului after Wednesday morning’s announcement that the 2019 event raised $345,870 for Maui community organizations. The designated beneficiaries were: Boy Scouts of America, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, Hale Makua Health Services, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui and the Lahainaluna High School Foundation. These designated beneficiaries assisted in promoting the event, offsetting costs and providing volunteers. The tournament also made a donation to Friends of the Pu’u Kukui Watershed Preserve. Sentry Insurance made donations to the Maui United Way and a scholarship program for Maui public high school students — up to a dozen per year — to attend the University of Hawaii system institutions. Donations also were made to Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, Maui Junior Golf, Lahaina Junior Golf and Spare for Change, which offered custom-fitted clubs to kids for free at this year’s tournament.
Second photo: Sentry Tournament of Champions Executive Director Alex Urban sits in one of Sentry Insurance’s trademark blue chairs and has the champion’s trophy over his shoulder as he speaks Wednesday at Hale Makua Kahului. “What makes the Sentry Tournament of Champions truly special is this community that we play in, and the people that make this event the success that it is, from our sponsors, to our fans and volunteers, to everyone here today and in the Maui community,” said Urban. “This event has such a profound impact, and we take pride in our ability to support these local organizations that help the island of Maui in so many impactful ways.” The event has raised $6.6 million for Maui nonprofits since it started at the Kapalua Plantation Course in 1999.
