Brush fire closes highway at Maalaea

Honoapiilani Highway was temporarily closed at Maalaea on Monday morning while firefighters battled a brush fire on the makai side of the highway, officials said.

Wailuku firefighters were dispatched at 6:32 a.m. to the fire near the entrance to the road leading to windmills above Maalaea, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro. He said an area of about 30 by 60 feet of dry brush burned.

With light winds, the fire was contained at 6:48 a.m. and extinguished at about 7 a.m., Yatsushiro said.
