Texas woman killed in Haliimaile crash
A 39-year-old Texas woman was killed and five others were hospitalized in a three-vehicle traffic collision Sunday night in Haliimaile, police said.
The woman, who was pronounced dead at the crash scene, was identified as Teresa Pham of Spring, Texas.
Police said the collision occurred at 9:22 p.m. on Haliimaile Road 0.1 mile southwest of Hoomalie Place.
Based on preliminary investigation, a silver Honda Accord four-door sedan was traveling northeast on Haliimaile Road when it crossed left of center and collided with the driver’s side of a silver Land Rover Discovery sport utility vehicle that was traveling northwest in the opposite direction, police said.
After sideswiping the Land Rover, the Honda continued on a path still traveling left of center and collided head-on with a gray Nissan four-door sedan that was traveling northwest on Haliimaile Road, police said.
Pham, who sustained fatal injuries from the collision, was a passenger in the Nissan, police said. The 48-year-old man driving the Nissan and three other passengers – a 50-year-old woman, a 50-year-old man and a 14-year-old juvenile – were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with injuries from the collision, according to police. The four remained hospitalized Monday morning.
The Nissan occupants were visitors who were reported to be on their way to the airport when the collision occurred.
The 23-year-old Paia woman driving the Honda was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, police said. She was alone in the Honda, police said.
None of the five occupants of the Land Rover were transported to the hospital, police said.
Police are investigating the use of seat belts by all of those involved in the collision, as well as the involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol.
The traffic death was the 10th this year on Maui County roads, compared with four at the same time last year.
