A 57-year-old Kaupo man died when the pickup truck he was driving failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and went 200 feet down a cliff in Kahikinui on Wednesday morning, police said.

The driver was identified as John Smith.

Hana residents called to report the crash, which occurred at about 7:45 a.m. on Piilani Highway, just west of Manawainui Bridge in Kahikinui, police said.

The 2017 Ram pickup truck was traveling west toward Kula on the highway when it failed to negotiate the curve as the road bends to the right and went off the cliff, police said. The truck rolled about 200 feet down into Manawainui Gulch, police said.

Smith sustained fatal injuries and died at the crash scene.

He was properly wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.

The traffic death was the 12th on Maui County roads, compared with five at the same time last year.
