Police said alcohol is a factor in a collision Sunday night in Kihei that killed a 49-year-old Kihei woman and injured three others, based on preliminary investigation.

The collision occurred at 7:24 p.m. on Piilani Highway north of Welakahao Road when a gray 2008 Ford F150 pickup truck was traveling north, crossed left of center and collided into a white 2016 Nissan Versa that was heading south on the highway, police said. The Nissan then collided into a white 2016 Ford Focus, also traveling south, police said.

The Nissan driver, who died at the crash scene, was identified as 49-year-old Mildred Jouvenat. A 14-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Nissan sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

The Ford F150 driver, a 43-year-old Kihei man, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, police said.

A 74-year-old Kihei woman driving the Ford Focus also was transported to the hospital after suffering minor injuries, police said.

Police said the Ford F150 driver wasn’t wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. All others were wearing their seat belts, police said.

The crash caused the closure of Piilani Highway between Lipoa Street and Welakahao Road from about 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.

The traffic death was the 13th this year on Maui County roads, compared with 10 at the same time last year.
