Safe school route workshop scheduled

The Maui News

A workshop on safe routes to school will be held in Kahului on Sept. 19, the state Department of Transportation has announced.

The workshops will provide community leaders, school officials, health and transportation professionals, law enforcement officers, parents and neighbors with the knowledge needed to develop Safe Routes to School programs in their communities.

The meeting will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the DOT Maui District Office at 650 Palapala Drive.

The DOT manages the federally funded Safe Routes to School program, which aims to get children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bike to school. The program also seeks to improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution around schools.

To register for a workshop, visit hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/srts/ and click “Upcoming Workshops.” Or, contact Tara Lucas at (808) 692-7696 or saferoutestoschool@hawaii.gov.

Participants who need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability should contact Lucas at the number and email provided above. Requests should be made as early as possible.
