Another moving day for ‘houseless’ woman

“Where is God, where is compassion?” asks a woman, who declined to give her name, as she stands beside her belongings along Maui Veterans Highway in Puunene on Wednesday morning. The camp where she was living on the west side of the road was recently cleared out. A private crew was on the scene, cleaning the area, but not taking the belongings away. She said she wasn’t homeless. “I’m houseless, since 2015. This stuff makes it really hard. Last year, they moved us four times.” The woman said she did not like housing provided by the county or other agencies because there “were too many rules.” Officials who work with the island’s homeless said this is the attitude of many of the people still out on the street.
