Man brought to shore safely
Firefighters helped a 37-year-old man to shore Wednesday morning after he was swept out into the surf by a riptide at Koki Beach in Hana, the Maui Fire Department reported.
Responding to a call at 11:18 a.m., Hana firefighters arrived to find the victim supporting himself with a rescue tube. Before firefighters arrived, a 25-year-old man swam the rescue tube out to the victim, a nonswimmer from Oakland, Calif., who was 150 feet offshore at the northern end of the beach.
A firefighter swam out with another rescue tube before two firefighters helped bring the victim to shore, where medics assessed his condition, according to the Fire Department. The man was in good condition and had swallowed some seawater and refused transport to the Hana clinic, the Fire Department reported.
