An unresponsive swimmer aboard a charter catamaran moored at Honolua Bay was pronounced dead Thursday after he was brought to shore, according to the Maui Fire Department.
Police identified the victim as 65-year-old Kevin Gilmartin of Woodland Hills, Calif.
Lahaina patrol officers, Napili firefighters and a lifeguard on rescue watercraft responded to the 10:57 a.m. call reporting an unresponsive man was being brought to shore on a Teralani charter boat, officials said. Police said the man was found floating facedown in the ocean.
A lifeguard was put aboard the catamaran to provide basic life support while the vessel went to Honokahua Bay, where medics and firefighters were waiting, the Fire Department said. When the catamaran arrived at D.T. Fleming Beach Park, the victim was brought to shore by rescue watercraft, according to the Fire Department.
Medics and firefighters continued efforts to revive the man before he was pronounced dead at the scene, the Fire Department said.
