Two rescued from boat fire off Lanai

A boat that caught on fire off Lanai on Tuesday morning was towed back to Maui after the Coast Guard evacuated two people aboard the 40-foot vessel, officials said.

Lanai firefighters also responded to the 10:17 a.m. call reporting the boat was on fire about 2 miles from shore at Kaiolohia Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, on the north shore of Lanai, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The fire extinguished itself due to lack of oxygen, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew West.

The engine and battery of the boat were disabled from the fire, which was smoldering, the Fire Department reported. The occupants weren’t injured, the Fire Department said.

A Coast Guard boat from Maalaea towed the boat back to Maui, West said. The boat “Ku’ulei” was from Lahaina, according to the Fire Department.
