UH-MC food X-celerator applications accepted

The UH-Maui College Maui Food Industry X-celerator Program, the first food industry business accelerator program in the state, currently is accepting applications.

Space is limited to 12 participants. The deadline to apply is Sept. 6 with an application fee of $349.

The eight-week program runs from Sept. 9 to Oct. 31. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday nights in the UH-MC Maui Food Innovation Research Kitchen, Laulima Building Room 106.

Courses will be guided by Greg Canbanting, a local food marketing and distribution expert.

The program will provide an overview of business planning and marketing, good manufacturing practices, industry trends, packaging and food industry requirements. Weekly meetings will include presentations by leading industry experts.

There will be time for participants to solve problems collaboratively on their products and business development within cohort teams, to access coaches who offer relevant industry expertise, work on design and packaging options, and review labeling regulations.

Participants will have access to the Maui Food Innovation Research certified kitchen facility to test food products during the course and after completion.

At the end of the course, participants will be given an opportunity to showcase their food business at a “Showcase Pitch Event” judged by food manufacturing professionals. Judges will award the top three businesses with a portion of funding resources from various donors.

After completion of the program, alumni will be supported in applying for showcase events, such as the Made in Maui Festival, Made in Hawaii Festival, Kapalua Wine & Food Festival and the Hawaii Hospitality Industry Trade Show.
