Sirens blare, no emergency

Emergency sirens, which were heard in Kahului, were mistakenly activated by the Honolulu Police Department shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday.
There is no emergency, county spokesman Chris Sugidono said at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday.
A short burst of the alarm, similar to a test, was heard in the area near the old Safeway in Kahului.
Sugidono said the siren was activated accidentally by the Honolulu Police Department during training.
Alarms also were heard on Oahu, prompting the National Weather Service to post on its Facebook page that there was no tsunami threat.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell tweeted shortly after 5:45 p.m. that “our preliminary investigation shows HPD’s inadvertent sounding of the emergency sirens at about 5:10 p.m. happened throughout Oahu and possibly one siren on Maui.”
He emphasized in an earlier tweet that there was “no emergency and no cause for alarm.”
