Two charged, bail set in early-morning Kahului shooting case

Manuel Nunes Jr., 36, and Blossom Edayan Nunes, 36, were charged and bail was set Friday in connection with the early-morning shooting Thursday near the old Safeway parking lot in Kahului, according to police documents.

After an altercation between two homeless men in the Hoohana Street area around 4 a.m. Thursday, Manuel Nunes Jr. allegedly used a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with birdshot to shoot the 28-year-old victim in the upper back and in the back of his head, police said. The victim survived but was hospitalized.

Manuel Nunes Jr. was charged with second-degree attempted murder, loaded firearm on the highway, place to keep a pistol, place to keep ammunition, prohibited possession of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangering. He was being held on $500,000 bail Friday.

Blossom Nunes was charged for a place to keep ammunition, hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence. She was being held on $5,000 bail Friday.

Maui Police Department could not be immediately reached Saturday for an update on whether the two were still being held.
