Last chance for chow fun at famed Suda family store
Crowds come out to say thank you, goodbye
KIHEI — Roy Suda dishes up a bowl of chow fun noodles Saturday morning while daughters Rochelle Manuel (right) and Ronnelle Suda make cheeseburgers on the final day of business for Suda Seafood & Deli in Kihei. Roy and wife Carol are set to retire, putting to rest a family business that was started as Suda Store in 1967 by Roy’s mother, Hatsuko Suda.
Friends and longtime customers lined up through the door at times for their chance to say “thanks” and “goodbye,” and to have their last orders of the famous Suda chow fun, saimin noodles and deluxe cheeseburgers. Carol juggled the register work, among other duties.
Daughter Ronnelle said they sold out of everything by noon on Friday, so they were up early making extra for the final day.
“It’s bittersweet,” she said.
Also helping during Saturday’s rush of customers were members of the family’s next generation, Rochelle’s son, Jacob Manuel, 16, and daughter, Kiana Manuel, 13.
