Woman rescued after Iao Valley fall

A 19-year-old woman was airlifted from Iao Valley State Park after she fell and initially lost consciousness while hiking above trails in the park Tuesday afternoon, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Kahului firefighters, a rescue crew aboard the Air One helicopter, a battalion chief and medic responded to the 1:37 p.m. call.

The woman, who lives in Austria, was hiking above designated trails when she fell backward from about 5 feet while standing on a rock, according to the Fire Department. She struck the back of her head, leaving her unconscious initially and causing a laceration and bleeding, the Fire Department reported.

A hiker who was with the injured woman had to hike 20 minutes until she could get phone reception to call for help. When firefighters arrived, the patient was alert and talking. She was airlifted by helicopter, then transported to the hospital by ambulance.
