Swimmer in distress helped to shore

A California visitor was taken to the Hana Clinic after being helped to shore by a surfer at Koki Beach on Saturday, according to a fire official.

The 38-year-old man was apparently having difficulty in the current and was assisted to shore by a surfer, Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said. Emergency crews received the call at 9:20 a.m. Engine 7 in Hana found the man on the beach upon arriving at the scene. The man was reportedly in and out and consciousness when crews arrived.

Medics transported the man to the Hana Clinic, Yatsushiro said.
