Water conservation still on in Waikapu

Residents in the Waikapu / Wailuku Heights areas are asked to continue their voluntary water conservation measures with repairs on a broken well pump expected to be completed by the end of the month, the county Department of Water Supply said Monday.

The water department issued requests for voluntary conservation on June 21 in Waikapu, Kehalani Mauka and Wailuku Heights following a spike in water use coupled with a pump problem for the Waikapu well.

Water Director Jeff Pearson on Monday asked residents to continue to conserve water, adding that if all goes well the Waikapu well pump should be fixed by the end of October.

Initially, a leak was suspected for the increased consumption, but no leak has been found, Pearson said. The water-use spike likely is being caused by the hot, dry weather.
