Lanai woman hit by truck, dies in hospital

A Lanai woman who was hit by a truck while crossing Lanai Avenue on Thursday afternoon has died, Maui police said Friday.

Christine Sandi, 57, was crossing the street on Lanai Avenue about 10 feet north of Sixth Street when she was hit by a 2018 Ford pickup truck traveling northbound on Lanai Avenue at about 12:10 p.m. Thursday.

Sandi was taken to Lanai Community Hospital in critical, life-threatening condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries and died.

The driver of the truck, a 55-year-old Lanai man, was not injured.

Preliminary investigation revealed Sandi was legally within the roadway crossing west to east, police said.

The driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. Airbags did not deploy.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined, as the investigation is still pending.

The incident is Maui County’s 20th traffic fatality of 2019, as compared to 16 at the same time last year.
