Man charged in hatchet attack

A homeless man is charged with using a hatchet to attack another homeless man while he was sleeping in Wailuku last month.

John Decambra Jr., 44, has pleaded not guilty to attempted first-degree assault, third-degree promoting of a dangerous drug, third-degree promoting of a detrimental drug and possessing drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested soon after the victim was found bleeding from his face and neck in a Wailuku parking lot shortly before 4 a.m. Oct. 26, according to police. The victim reported being asleep in his homeless camp when he was struck on the face.

When police officers located Decambra near the parking lot, he said he was upset that the victim was on his aina, according to police. Officers reported seeing blood on Decambra’s hands and recovered a hatchet with blood on the blade.

A Jan. 13 trial is set for Decambra in 2nd Circuit Court.
