Man released from jail back in custody
WAILUKU — A man who was released from jail after arson charges were dismissed last week was back in custody after he was arrested Tuesday on a warrant alleging he violated his probation in an assault case.
Kealiiwahamana Neula, 33, who has no local address, was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail on the warrant. It alleges that he violated his probation by failing to report to his probation officer.
Neula was released from jail and was placed on one year’s probation when he was sentenced Oct. 18 for third-degree assault. Another charge of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Neula had been charged with two counts of first-degree arson in connection with a fire Nov. 6 at a home on Holowai Place where he had been staying with his sister. Her family and tenants of another rental unit at the home were displaced by the fire.
At a preliminary hearing Nov. 13, Judge Blaine Kobayashi dismissed the charges, saying testimony about the damages to the residence didn’t provide sufficient evidence to support the charges.
The prosecutor’s office has said it will proceed with further charges in the arson investigation.
