Meeting to discuss property tax changes

A community meeting on proposed real property tax changes will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Kahului Community Center.

Organized by Maui County Council Member Tasha Kama, who holds the Kahului residency seat, the meeting will address possible changes in property tax classifications and the establishment of tiered tax rates.

The changes came out of a council temporary investigative group that looked to reform the real property tax system.

Marcy Martin, senior real property technical officer for the Department of Finance, will give a brief presentation of the proposed changes followed by a question-and-answer period.

Other similar meetings are expected to be or have been held in other districts, but all residents are invited to the Kahului meeting, according to a news release.
