Prison break being repaired

Richard Miller uses lime mortar to set a coral block while repairing a damaged buttress on the perimeter wall of Hale Pa’ahao, or Old Lahaina Prison, on Wednesday along Wainee Street. The buttress was damaged in a June 15, 2018, hit-and-run traffic accident. The retired mason from Kalaupapa National Historical Park said lime mortar was used when the prison was first built in the 1850s. “We want this to be like it was originally,” he said. Miller and Keoki Pescaia, an equipment operator from Kalaupapa, are the two-man crew piecing the wall back together. Miller said along with the coral blocks and rubble dislodged when the wall was damaged, the project was expected to use 20 bags of mortar and a ton of sand.
