Rental fines hearing set

A Maui Planning Department public hearing on rules relating to fines for unpermitted transient vacation rental operations will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Kalana Pakui Conference Room in Wailuku.

The hearing is to update the Planning Department’s administrative rules.

Voters in 2018 increased the fines for operators of a transient vacation rental without a permit to $20,000, plus $10,000 per day of unlawful operations. The previous fines were $1,000 and $1,000 per day.

The County Code was updated on Oct. 7 to reflect the charter change. This step will update the department rules.

After the public hearing, if there are no substantive changes made to the proposed amendments, the department will finalize the rule changes and forward them to the mayor for his signature.

The proposed amendments are available online at the Planning Department’s home page at www.mauicounty.gov/121/Planning-Department. Some minor procedural changes also are included in the proposed amendments.

Written testimony may be submitted by mail to: Planning Department, 2200 Main St., Suite 315, Wailuku 96793. Written testimony must be received by the Planning Department before the public hearing closes Tuesday.
