Two Maui teachers finalists for state teacher of the year

Two Maui teachers were honored last month at Washington Place on Oahu as finalists in the 2020 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year program.

Jessica Adkins, a teacher at Maui High School, was named the teacher of the year for the Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui Complex, while Kaui Spitalsky, a teacher at Lahainaluna High, was selected as teacher of the year for the Hana-Lahainaluna-Lanai-Molokai Complex.

They were among 15 Complex Area Teachers of the Year and Charter School Teachers of the Year that were recognized on Oct. 25.

Ka’imiola Elementary School teacher Cecilia Chung of Oahu was named the 2020 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year.

Kaui Spitalsky was a finalist for state teacher of the year. She is the Hana-Lahainaluna-Lanai-Molokai Complex teacher of the year.

Each finalist received a $500 award from The Polynesian Cultural Center, a $100 award from the Hawaii Schools Federal Credit Union and honorariums by Hawaiian Electric Co., according to a news release.

On hand for the awards were Gov. David Ige and Department of Education Superintendent Christina Kishimoto.
