High-surf advisory up for Maui County

A high-surf advisory with waves of 6 to 9 feet along east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai has been posted for 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service said the swell will start out northerly then shift to the north-northeast tonight. Wave heights could grow, possibly increasing the reach of the advisory and the posting of a high-surf warning.

There could be strong breaking waves and shore break with powerful longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous, the weather service said.

The forecast for the central valley today is mostly cloudy with occasional rain in the morning, the weather service said. Rain is likely in the afternoon with a slight chance of thunderstorms. There is an 80 percent chance of rain.

High temperatures will be around 77 degrees with overnight lows between 62 and 67 degrees. Winds are expected from the northeast, 10 to 15 mph.
