High surf forecast through Wednesday
A high-surf advisory for north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai and west-facing shores of Molokai is up through Wednesday night, with waves building to 18 feet, the National Weather Service said.
A large, long-period northwest swell began building Monday night and will hold into Wednesday. An even larger northwest swell will move in Wednesday night, likely pushing surf to warning levels, the weather service said.
Large breaking waves of 12 to 18 feet should hold through Wednesday. The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m.
Strong breaking waves and shore break could occur. Longshore and rip currents in the ocean could make swimming difficult and dangerous.
The forecast for today is mostly sunny with isolated showers in the afternoon in the central valley, the weather service said. High temperatures should reach 83 degrees with overnight lows of 61 to 66 degrees. Light winds turning northerly should blow up to 10 mph in the afternoon. There is a 20 percent chance of rain.
