Man found working on stolen moped

A man was arrested on drug and theft charges after he was seen working on a stolen moped on a sidewalk in Lahaina early Monday, police said.

Christopher Douglas, 39, of Lahaina was charged with second-degree theft, fourth-degree criminal property damage, third-degree promoting of a dangerous drug, defacing a moped serial number and removing or altering identification marks. His bail was set at $7,000.

Douglas was working on the moped, which had no license plates, at 2:15 a.m. in the 1000 block of Front Street, according to police. The moped appeared to have been spray-painted and its ignition punched, police said.

The vehicle identification number was removed from the steering column and safety sticker, but its description matched one that was reported stolen Sunday afternoon from Wainee Street in Lahaina, according to police.

In a compartment beneath the moped seat, police reported finding a plastic packet containing suspected crystal methamphetamine.
