Wind, high surf to continue for Maui County

The Maui News

A wind advisory has been extended for Lanai through 6 a.m. today with northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph and localized gusts up to 50 mph anticipated.

The National Weather Service also cancelled a wind advisory for Maui and Molokai.

Winds this strong are capable of bringing down weaker tree branches, which could lead to localized power outages.

Meanwhile, a high-surf advisory was issued early today for north- and east-facing shores of Maui County, as well as other parts of the state.

The advisory will remain in effect until 6 p.m. today, according to the service, with waves expected to reach 12 to 18 feet on north sides and 6 to 9 feet on east shores of the islands.

Rough ocean conditions make swimming difficult and dangerous, and beachgoers should be cautious.

Waves may drop slightly today, but the high-surf advisory will likely be extended for the same shorelines into this afternoon, the service said.
