Seabury boys, mixed crews win MIL titles

KAHULUI — Lining the shoreline at Kahului Harbor, the Seabury Hall canoe paddling team cheered on their mixed crew, which had just capped the day with the Spartans’ second championship-clinching victory.

Both the Spartans’ boys and mixed teams clinched Maui Interscholastic League titles with wins Saturday at MIL regatta No. 4, earning a spot at the Hawaiian Airlines State Championships on Feb. 8 in Honolulu.

“It feels amazing, like, we’ve been battling with so many other schools the whole time and to finally get that third race that gets us the win, it feels really good,” said Seabury’s Ryder Tremble, who steered both crews to wins. “We were behind a little bit at the start, but we just made it back, had a good turn, and yeah, stoked.”

Just before the final heats began, the wind slowly picked up and a few minor swells rolled in, but the conditions were nothing new as Tremble, Ga Sum Chang, Kala’i Anderson, Flavio Signoretti, Josh Foley and Caleb Proctor raced on their “home court” to pull away in the boys race with a time of 4 minutes, 3.63 seconds.

“With the sets, I try to go a little farther out, so that just in case there’s a set, I can kind of turn in and you don’t want to get caught on the farther end of the set so that you can’t get back out in your lane,” Tremble said. “We train here every day so this is super light wind for us even though there’s a little breeze, so we were ready.”

Kahealani Haupu of Seabury Hall exits a victory tunnel after helping the Spartans’ mixed team take first place Saturday.

Kamehameha Maui (4:10.35) followed in second and King Kekaulike (4:11.44) was third.

“It feels satisfying, I know all of us worked really hard for it, so it’s nice that all that practice time paid off,” Anderson said. “I think our goal right now is just to peak, focus on our endurance and fitness just to make sure we’re ready for states, and see where it goes from there.”

The Spartans’ mixed crew of Tremble, Kai Jenkins, Jake Devane, Kahealani Haupu, Lana Kelmenson and Keahi Artates extended their lead after the turn, winning in 4:09.87. Na Alii (4:17.25) was second and Lahainaluna (4:21.86) was third.

The King Kekaulike girls crew of Tehani Santos, Kuaola Emmsley, Skyler Sands, Ashley Mooney, Morgan Bartlett and Nohea Ledesma kept themselves in the race for an MIL crown after edging the Spartans on Saturday, putting both crews at two wins this season.

Ledesma, who steered Na Alii to the victory in 4:35.46, also knew how important this regatta was to stay in contention for a No.1 state seed. Seabury crossed in 4:38.91 and Molokai was third in 4:49.90.

The Seabury Hall mixed crew heads to a win Saturday at Kahului Harbor.

“Winning that race means a huge accomplishment for us,” she said. “I could tell it was, like, a huge relief for them. We all just laid down because we were all dead, but we always gather hands and say ‘imua’ and ‘good job girls,’ and it was really special for us too because (Bartlett) has been trying super hard, and this was her first official, official race, so it was just really good for her and we were pushing for her, and it was just good energy.”

From the center lane, the Spartans went out strong toward the turn with King Kekaulike on their side. Na Alii held on to outlast them.

Seabury head coach Paul Luuwai said “it’s all in on the girls” next week at the final MIL regatta but was still happy with all the crews’ performances Saturday.

“I just never thought that we would be in this position because we have such a young team, but here we are, we did it, they just persevered,” Luuwai said. “We really deserve it. The kids go through so much training — all that blood, sweat and tears. Nothing is given to you or handed to you, you just have to go out there and take it. And wow, they sure did it. What a day we had for Spartan nation.”
