Stolen pup recovered with weapons

The Maui News

WAILUKU — Police recovered a stolen toy poodle and seized rifles, shotguns and pistols, including some that were stolen, in a search last week at a Kula residence.

The contraband was found when officers with the Crime Reduction Unit and Special Response Team executed warrants at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 8 to search the premises on Puuala Street and a 37-year-old man living there, police Assistant Chief John Jakubczak said at a Maui Police Commission meeting Wednesday.

He said the man, who was the target of the investigation, was arrested along with his girlfriend and a friend.

In addition to the dog, police recovered rifles, shotguns and pistols, including one that had been stolen in 2014 and another that was stolen in 2018, Jakubczak said. He said a crossbow, swords and air rifles and handguns also were seized, taking off the streets “firearms that are potentially dangerous.”

Police also recovered a motorcycle that the suspect reported taking “as collateral” when his motorcycle was damaged, Jakubczak said.

“He said he took the dog because he felt the owner was not taking care of the dog,” Jakubczak said.

According to police records, a 34-year-old woman living at the residence and a 44-year-old Haiku woman were arrested. The two and the man were later released pending further investigation of theft, firearm and drug charges, according to police records.

Jakubczak said the pending cases would be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.

He said the cases were another example of work done by the Crime Reduction Unit, which is an “excellent unit that is proactive in conducting criminal cases.”
