The joint is jumping at Kihei gym
First photo: Makawao’s Josh Kaaihue drives against Kihei’s Steve Houle during a pickup basketball game at the recently opened South Maui Community Park Gymnasium last week in Kihei. The players gave the $21 million gym that opened Dec. 9 rave reviews. “I think it’s a beautiful facility,” Houle said. “They did it right.” Kaaihue said it was one of the two best gyms on Maui. “It’s a nice gym,” he said. “It gives Kamehameha (Maui) a run for its money.” County parks South District recreation technician Todd Richter said the gym, which features two courts end to end, as well as three meeting rooms, a kitchen, outstanding sound system, paved outdoor areas and two offices, is becoming a popular place to play. “Everybody loves the air conditioning,” Richter said. Open gym sessions are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. “We average about 40 people at this time, and we had 72 here on Tuesday night,” Richter said. “Tomorrow, we’ll have six Menehune basketball games.” The gym also hosts District League basketball games and volleyball practice. Permits to use the gym can be obtained at the South Maui District Office.
