Fat Tuesday is Malasada Day

First photo: Home Maid Bakery pastry department manager Dixie Samson loads hot malasadas into boxes at the bustling Wailuku business Tuesday morning. The traditional Fat Tuesday treats were flying out the door, with manager Amy Kozuki saying her goal was to sell 1,000 dozen throughout the day before Lent. “For us the customer is number one,” Kozuki said, adding that sanitation is a priority. “We make sure we serve the best quality food with the friendliest service. I really appreciate the people who come to support us. We’re just a small local business trying to do our best.”

Second photo: Waikapu mom Natasha Kaaa stops to pose with her kids, Iokua, 12, Huakai, 10 and Kenzeo, 6, after picking up malasadas and other pastries Tuesday morning at Home Maid Bakery. Natasha Kaaa said she was planning to give up eating carbohydrates for Lent, while Iokua said milk, Huakai, POG and Kenzeo, swearing.
