Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura will continue to chair the Policy Board of the Maui Metropolitan Organization, an independent entity that facilitates state and county work on federally funded transportation projects.
As chair, Sugimura will continue to lead the establishment, policy-setting and review of MPO plan documents prior to submission to the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration for compliance requirements, a news release from the Maui MPO said.
Sugimura has led the Maui MPO since January 2019. She holds the County Council Upcountry residency seat and chairs the council Water, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee.
County Transportation Director Marc Takamori will serve as vice chairman. Other members include state Transportation Director Jade Butay, county Planning Director Michele McLean, county Public Works Director Rowena Dagdag-Andaya, Council Members Tamara Paltin and Shane Sinenci, state Rep. Troy Hashimoto and state Sen. Roz Baker.
The Maui MPO was established by the state and county in 2016 to coordinate transportation planning at all levels of government for Maui. The organization could facilitate the receipt of more than $186 million in federal funding for transportation projects over the next five years.
