SECOND PHOTO: Deborah Patton and Capt. Steve Lawless of Captain Steve’s Rafting discuss their recording of the partial birth of a whale on their GoPro during a routine whale watch Feb. 3 off of Lahaina.

FIRST PHOTO: Their video was played on first day of the Whale Tales Conference at The Ritz Carlton, Kapalua, on Friday. There were more than 600 people in attendance. The conference continues today and Sunday. For more information on the conference and the schedule, go to www.whaletales.org.

THIRD PHOTO: This is a screenshot of a video taken by Deborah Patton, a videographer and crew member/office manager for Captain Steve’s Rafting, on Feb. 3. In a Virtual Newsroom filing with The Maui News, Patton said the female humpback trying to give birth circled their raft. She made more than 50 tight circles under their raft, she said.
