‘If you can give, give’

First photo: Shirley Blackburn (left) from Mayor Michael Victorino’s budget office and Tyson Miyake, Victorino’s chief of staff, hand out bags of produce Monday at the Upcountry Pool parking lot in Pukalani. Hundreds of cars snaked up and down Old Haleakala Highway and across Makawao Avenue as part of a giveaway to “people in need” organized by Pukalani Superette with partners Sysco Hawaii and the County of Maui. According to Megan Nakashima, the Pukalani Superette’s director of public outreach, they filled 300 shopping bags with an estimated 7,000 pounds of produce. She added that in addition to the sponsors, Kumu Farms showed up with boxes of papayas Monday morning, Mahi Pono donated potatoes and “a lady from Kula brought a bunch of avocado.”

Second photo: Myles Nakashima, co-owner of Pukalani Superette, kneels on the asphalt as he loads up shopping bags with produce Monday. “The Superette has always had a history of giving,” he said in explaining the event. “My father said once, ‘if you can give, give.’ So when people ask for help, we try to give.”
