No tsunami threat from Kuril quake
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Tuesday afternoon that waves generated by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake east of the Kuril Islands off Asia are “below the threat threshold.”
The center issued the update about an hour after posting a tsunami watch at about 5 p.m. The earliest arrival of waves in Hawaii was estimated at 10:42 p.m. Tuesday.
The waves were expected to be about a foot above tide level for coastlines.
“Sea-level readings from the nearest two deep ocean dart gauges confirm that only very small tsunami waves were generated by this earthquake, and there is no further threat,” the center said in its 6 p.m. report.
