Junk vehicle program expanded

The Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program has expanded to allow residents to junk two vehicles per year for free — without having to visit the Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing, the county Department of Environmental Management’s Abandoned Vehicles and Metals Section announced.

The program helps residents dispose of unwanted vehicles legally, safely and properly to the permitted Hammerhead Metals Recycling facility in Puunene.

“I strongly urge the public to take advantage of this service, which will help clean up our roadways and make them more safe and accessible to everyone,” said Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino.

Residents still must meet the eligibility requirements, which are posted on the Maui County website, and complete the required forms. Participants also are required to complete a short survey for continued monitoring of the program.

For more information, contact the county AVM Office at 270-6102 or go to www. mauicounty.gov/avm.

To report an abandoned vehicle, call the Maui Police Department’s nonemergency number at 244-6400, and then press “0” and a dispatcher will take the report.
