Man charged in truck theft

A man who was seen driving a stolen truck more than 80 mph and running a red light while fleeing from police was arrested early Friday, police said.

Justin Fonseca Swope, 28, of Lahaina was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, reckless driving, excessive speeding and disobedience to police officers. His bail was set at $50,000.

The white Ford pickup truck was reported stolen between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. Tuesday while it was parked on East Wakea Avenue in Kahului. Shortly after 4 p.m., police reported seeing the truck heading south on Maui Veterans Highway.

When police tried to stop the truck, the driver continued at speeds of more than 80 mph, almost hitting a white sport utility vehicle while running a red light at Ohukai Road and Piilani Highway in Kihei, according to an affidavit filed in court to support the charges.

Police located Fonseca Swope, who was identified as the driver, at 3:05 a.m. Friday at 7-Eleven in Kahului, police said. He had the keys to the stolen truck in his pocket and told police the truck was parked at King’s Cathedral Maui in Kahului, according to police. The truck was found there and returned to its owner.
