MACC to open for drive-in movie nights

Amphitheater to host vehicles for free showings of ‘Toy Story 4’

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will be turning the A&B Amphitheater into a drive-in theater Friday and June 6 for showings of Disney Pixar’s “Toy Story 4.”

The MACC has been closed and its shows canceled or postponed since the COVID-19 emergency orders in late March. This modification of its Starry Night Cinema — which ironically is across the street from an old drive-in that shut down in the 1960s — allows the MACC to open its doors to the public again.

“Challenging times require creative solutions. The MACC team has designed a fun event that still meets all the current COVID-19 guidelines,” said MACC President and CEO Art Vento in a news release Friday.

The MACC worked closely with the county, which is offering its support, to create a safe event, he said.

“It is widely believed that the entire arts and entertainment industry will require a very long runway to recover, and the MACC is no exception,” Vento said. “Yet, while we continue this ‘intermission’ at the MACC, as compared to any semblance of programming that has happened historically, we also want to embrace what is possible, rather than adhere to only what is not possible.

“Even with event-specific limitations, we remain committed that — when it can happen on Maui, it will happen at the MACC.”

The event is free but advance registration is necessary due to vehicle logistics. Patrons need to call the MACC Box Office at 242-SHOW (7469), beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, to make the reservation and provide the vehicle license plate number and type. The box office is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. today.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. both nights. The movie will be shown rain or shine.

Once a reservation is set, a print-at-home confirmation will be emailed to patrons and must be presented upon arrival; patrons must be in the same vehicle registered in order to be admitted to the venue. A copy on a cellphone is acceptable. Reservations are nontransferable.

The MACC’s main entrance will open each night starting at 6:30 p.m. Once inside the venue, vehicles will be directed by MACC staff to park in order of arrival to maintain safety zones.

Attendees will not be allowed to exit their vehicles during the film to adhere to safety and social distancing guidelines. Due to vehicle spacing, once vehicles have parked in the venue, there will be no early exiting; MACC staff will direct vehicles to the nearest exit at the end of the movie.

Attendees are allowed to bring their own food and drink, but no alcoholic beverages will be allowed in vehicles. Restroom use will be limited to urgent needs only, and patrons are required to wear a mask and socially distance from others. The MACC is a nonsmoking/nonvape venue.

Bob Burrichter, MACC marketing director, said they are estimating the amphitheater can handle about 65 vehicles, “though that may vary once we get it all plotted out late next week.”

The setup will be the same as regular Starry Night Cinema presentations with the screen in the pavilion facing out toward the amphitheater. The screen is 48 feet wide by 22 feet high, “the largest in the state,” Burrichter said.

There will be no hookup of speakers like in the old drive-ins; Burrichter said the sound will be in the same setup as the usual Starry Night events with speakers elevated and flanking the stage.

In the fourth installment for this series of classic animated films, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody’s slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep.

As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realize that they’re two worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy.

The film is rated G and has a running time of 100 minutes.

Benny Uyetake will provide musical preshow entertainment.
