Man with rifle in vehicle is arrested
WAILUKU — A 41-year-old man was arrested Monday after police reported recovering a rifle from the back of an abandoned sport utility vehicle in the Piihana Farms area of Wailuku.
Kawika Rosaga was charged with two counts each of keeping an unloaded firearm in an improper place and prohibited possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $12,000.
Rosaga was arrested after police Crime Reduction Unit officers received information Monday night that he was walking on farm property with a rifle, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges. When officers contacted Rosaga next to the abandoned vehicle, a scope was visible from a partially open firearm case in the back of the vehicle, according to police.
Police had been in the area the morning of April 1 when officers heard a loud gunshot coming from the Piihana Farms area, according to the declaration. Police later received information that Rosaga had been seen carrying the rifle that day, the declaration says.
Rosaga has prior convictions for abuse and third-degree assault, according to court records.
