Veterans show up anyway to honor the fallen
The traditional Memorial Day ceremony at Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic emergency orders but a few veterans went up to the cemetery Monday to place floral arrangements at the war memorial monuments, which honor veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Sam Favella, Warren Nishida and Moses Kahalekulu of the Maui Korean War Veterans Association; Jeanie Archer, president of the Korean Community Association; Bo Mahoe of the Maui County Veterans Council; and Kalia Dizon and Elena P. Walker of the Na Koa Kahiko Wahine presented florals on behalf of their organizations. Council Members Yuki Lei Sugimura and Mike Molina also presented arrangements. Dizon sang “God Bless America” and Bobby Luuwai played taps.
