Maui metro area jobless rate No. 1

The Kahului-Wailuku-Lahaina metropolitan area recorded the highest jobless rate of all 389 areas in the nation in April — 35 percent — and the largest jump from April 2019 — 32.5 percentage points, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.

The Maui metro area was followed by Kokomo, Ind., 34.1 percent. Logan, Utah-Idaho, had the lowest unemployment rate at 6.2 percent.

A total of 215 metro areas had April jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 14.4 percent, 172 areas had rates above it, and two areas had rates equal to that of the nation.

On the increases from the previous April, the Maui metro area was followed by the 29.5 percentage point increase for Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise and 29.1 percentage point increase for Atlantic City-Mammonton, N.J.

The smallest rate were recorded in Logan and New Haven, Conn., up 4 percentage points each.
