Cellphone helps to locate lost hiker

Firefighters used cellphone coordinates to locate a lost hiker Wednesday in the Mahana Ridge area above Kapalua, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The hiker, a 47-year-old Kona woman, called 911 at 11:25 a.m. after she became lost while hiking for about two and a half hours, the Fire Department said.

Napili firefighters and a Kahului rescue crew used cellphone coordinates from 911 dispatch to locate the hiker. The rescue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter flew the woman to a safe area on Mahana Ridge, and she was then led back to her vehicle by 1:41 p.m., according to the Fire Department.

She wasn’t injured.
