Fire burns 50 acres, 90% contained

Fire crews were securing the perimeter and monitoring a brush fire that burned about 50 acres above Piilani Highway in Kihei on Monday afternoon.

The fire between Ohukai Street and Lipoa Parkway was 90 percent contained as of 9 p.m. Monday, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The cause of the fire, which was first reported at 2:27 p.m., was under investigation.

Kihei, Wailea and Kahului engine companies responded, along with Wailea and Kahului tankers, a Wailea ladder company, the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter and private bulldozers and water tankers.

They battled the fire in swirling winds of 10 to 15 mph, according to the Fire Department.

Police closed Piilani Highway between Ohukai Street and Piikea Avenue at 3:10 p.m., reopening the road by 4:22 p.m.
