Man punches cop, kicks police cruiser

A 25-year-old man was arrested Monday after he punched a police officer who responded to a report of an assault at Paia Bay, police reported.

Jason Murray of Kahului was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal property damage.

His bail was set at $11,500.

A police officer responding to the 11:37 a.m. call reported seeing Murray walking in the middle of Hana Highway. When the officer approached, Murray walked to the patrol car and kicked the driver’s side door, causing damage, according to police. After the officer got out of his police car, Murray charged at the officer and punched him on the right side of his head, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges.

The officer deployed his Taser to subdue and arrest Murray, according to police.

An investigation showed that Murray had punched another man before police arrived, according to the declaration.
