Pedestrian dies in vehicle collision
A pedestrian died in a collision with a vehicle Sunday night on Kahului Beach Road fronting Harbor Lights Condominiums, police said.
He was identified as 28-year-old Nelsin Naich, who was pronounced dead at the crash scene, police said.
The collision occurred at 8:23 p.m. as a 2014 Toyota 4Runner was traveling southeast on Kahului Beach Road and collided into the pedestrian, police said. The pedestrian was going in the southbound direction and illegally crossing the road outside a marked crosswalk, police said.
Police said the 39-year-old Kahului man driving the Toyota didn’t notice the pedestrian in the roadway. The driver and his two passengers, ages 39 and 5, weren’t injured, police said.
The driver and rear seat passenger were wearing seat belts, while the rear middle seat passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.
Police said preliminary investigation showed that speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is continuing and traffic crash investigators will make a final determination.
The traffic death was the sixth this year on Maui County roads, compared with 12 at the same time last year.
