Three fires reported Sunday afternoon
Firefighters extinguished three fires reported Sunday afternoon, including one in Kanaio that caused an estimated $20,000 in damage and displaced one person, the Maui Fire Department reported.
The first fire was reported at 12:15 p.m. on Hana Highway near Maliko Gulch. Paia firefighters and a Kahului tanker crew arrived to find about 1 acre of brush on fire. The fire was extinguished at 1:19 p.m.
Another fire was reported at 1:04 p.m. in the nearby area of Holomua Road. Kahului firefighters arrived to find a 1,500-square-foot area of brush on fire. With help from the Kahului tanker, firefighters quickly contained the fire, which was extinguished at 2:38 p.m., the Fire Department reported.
A third fire was reported at 1:53 p.m. makai of Piilani Highway in Kanaio. The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter was on scene first and found a structure and several abandoned vehicles on fire.
Kula and Makawao firefighters also responded, with crews needing to use four-wheel-drive firefighting utility vehicles to reach the fire because of rough terrain, according to the Fire Department.
Air One made water drops on the fire, which was declared extinguished at 7:30 p.m. The $20,000 in damage was reported to contents.
No injuries were reported, and the causes of the fires were unknown, the Fire Department reported.
