Drivers’ road tests to restart at DMVL
The Maui News
Modified road tests due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which call for the examiner standing outside the vehicle while observing driver’s maneuvers, begin Monday, the county Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing announced Wednesday.
Appointments for the new test will be taken beginning today.
Traditional road tests have been suspended due to the pandemic. Passing the Basic Vehicle Control Skills Test is needed to obtain a driver’s license.
“Drivers need to demonstrate that they can safely operate a vehicle while still maintaining physical distancing with our road test examiners,” said Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino. “These safety protocols have been developed for the health and safety of our customers and our County of Maui employees.”
Modified road tests will be offered in phases, with the first phase only open to individuals with permits expiring prior to Aug. 1 (The state has extended expired permits to Sept. 30.) The tests will resume Monday in Kahului and Kihei.
Tests will be offered later on Molokai and Lanai, the county said.
